The Crow's Nest - December 20, 2017
I just glanced out the window and it looks like a winter wonderland illustration you would find in a children’s Christmas storybook. Snowflakes are drifting down to a landscape of whiteness everywhere. This snowfall has been predicted for the last couple of days. It is so pretty to look at from the comfort of a warm house. To make the picture complete I just made myself a mug of hot chocolate with home-made marshmallows on top. I know, this whole scenario doesn’t sound very urbane or sophisticated, but that doesn’t matter. It is just a soothing landscape. On the other hand, numerous advisements have scrolled on the televisions asking people to take precautions if traveling in these weather conditions. I know Chuck had a dental appointment in Edmore this afternoon, but ended up canceling it. If you are familiar with this area, you know there is nothing but wide, open space between Edinburg and Edmore. Just s whiff of a wind and driving would become treacherous.
Our Community Christmas Party that was to be held December 4th had to be canceled because of hazardous winter conditions. It worked out fine though as we combined part of the event with the fundraiser that was held to benefit our grocery store, Market on Main. The day was a huge success. People donated so very generously. Hopefully the 50-year-old coolers can soon be replaced. It never ceases to amaze me how the fine people of this area always step up to help when there is a need. I can’t thank them enough for all they do. Santa was even able to find his way to this party.
Besides raising money, everyone was treated to a great meal of potato klub or baked potato served with ham, corn and cupcakes thanks to John T. Evenson, Dale Sondeland and Cindy Vargason. John had great helpers in Margaret Thorfinnson, Rose Moore and Lisa Sappa along with volunteers to help do dishes. I know Ruth Hall spent the whole time in the kitchen working.
The snowbird migration has started. Dave and Loretta Monson left last week for Arizona. I think Dennis and Beverly Hammer have already left also. Harold and Alida Flom are on their way to Arkansas for the winter with a stop in the cities for Christmas. When it’s all said and done, there aren’t many left to enjoy coffee down at the “Table of Knowledge” every day.
It is with such a very heavy heart that I pass on the news of the death of Toni Monsebroten. Toni was only 69 and had been battling cancer for a while. The chemo just got the best of her. Toni was loved by so many of us. She was always available to help in any way she could. Toni was quite the crafter and decorator. It was fun to see all the great ideas she put into play in her and Gary’s home. Toni’s funeral is this Friday morning. I just can’t believe she is not here with us anymore. Love and prayers go to Gary and family. We have lost a great friend.
Also, the family of Randy Mathiason is in our thoughts and prayers. Randy passed away last Monday. He had been sick for quite a while. Please keep Randy’s family in your prayers and remember Gary and Lois Mathiason also. Gary is Randy’s brother. Our hearts ache for everyone who is experiencing such losses.
During this special Christmas season please remember those who are sick or suffering in one way or another. Keep Debi Johnson in your prayers as she is a patient now at First Care Health Center in Park River.
